USING WIDE RIMS WITH COYOTE BEADLOCKS

BLIN-11 Rev2

Problem: Coyote beadlocks (BL) specify 10-inch maximum rim width. Can they be used in wider rims? Yes, with tires that have wide tire beads. Check with your tire manufacturer for your bead width.

Background: The Coyote beadlock 10” max width specification assumes that your tires have standard, ½” wide tire beads that fit completely behind standard rim bead bumps as pictured in Figure 1. The Coyote BL is designed and specified to fill that gap.

Fig. 1

However, large off-road tire beads are wider than normal. This varies by brand and is not exactly predictable by size. I’ve seen beads as wide as 1.25 inches. This illustration first calls your attention to the need to smooth those evil, nasty, inside, sharp edges of all tire beads. Also note how the wide beads reduce the space between the inside of the tire beads. They desirably use up space between the inside of the tire beads.

Fig.2

Assuming there is 1.25 inches of tire bead width on each side of the rim (2.5” total). Subtracting 1.0 total inch of normal tire bead width on each side (.5” each side), you reduce the gap by 1.5 inches as shown in Fig. 3. This also shows how those evil, sharp, nasty, tube-cutting inside, sharp tire bead edges have been smoothed off as recommended in BLIN-1.
